Cosplay Rules

Cosplay Registration

To enter, email the following information to: avcon2010@gmail.com with the title AVCON COSPLAY stated clearly in the header field.

  • Name of Cosplayer/s (If a group, list all cosplayers involved).
  • Name of costumed character/s (If a group, list all).
  • Title of the anime / manga / game the costumed characters are from.
  • If there is a skit, give a brief summary of the skit.
  • Add a picture of the character/s (electronically). This will be used to make the powerpoint shown during the presentation.
  • Any comments you would like to share about your costume.
  • Any music or video you would like played during your skit. This MUST be sent in by 5pm Saturday the 17th of July. Music / video submissions submitted AFTER this date will NOT be accepted.

DON’T FORGET TO ARRIVE EARLY DURING ‘COSPLAY MARSHALLING’ ON THE DAY!

Prize Categories

  1. Best Female Character - This prize is for the best depiction of a female character, regardless of the gender of the entrant.
  2. Best Male Character - This prize is for the best depiction of a male character, regardless of the gender of the entrant.
  3. Best Amateur Cosplayer - This prize is awarded to first time entrants, and those who still feel they are at a beginners level in regards to costume skill.
  4. Crowd Pleaser - This prize is for the costume/character portrayal that receives the warmest response from the crowd (This may be a sourced costume).
  5. Best Skit / Performance - This prize is for the entrant that best depicts their character and / or performs an entertaining skit (This may be a sourced costume).
  6. Best Group Cosplay - This prize is awarded to the best Cosplayer Group for the best depiction of their characters.

Note: Prizes will be awarded by judges to the entrant/s they feel best qualifies for the prize in any given category.

Entrants MUST

  1. Register! You must pre-register via email prior to the convention in order to enter. Pending available space you may be able to join the Cosplay Competition up to an hour prior to the event as a “parade entrant” only.
  2. Complete every field on the Cosplay Online Registration Form (above), without exception.
  3. Arrive promptly at the Main Hall during the Cosplay Marshalling timeslot on the day!
  4. Provide an image of the character.
  5. Comply with convention rules. Any unacceptable behaviour will result in dismissal from the event.
  6. Read and accept all Cosplay Competition rules.

Note: The organiser has the right to reject and remove any entries that fail to adhere to these rules.

Costumes

  1. Must be of either video game or Japanese anime / manga origin.
  2. Must not have won prizes in any other competitions. Such cosplayers may still parade their costume during the competition but will not be eligible for prizes. Competitors later proven to have worn costumers that have already won awards at other competitions will have their prizes revoked and awarded to the next suitable entrant.
  3. Must be suitable for a family audience.
  4. At least 70% of the work done on the costume must have been by the entrant to be eligible for costume prizes.
  5. Costumes that have been sourced (i.e. 70% of the costume was not made by the entrant) will still be eligible for skit / performance awards.
  6. Entrants that have been cosplaying for less than two years and not won any major prizes or completed related studies at a tertiary level may enter as an “amateur” costumer.

Props

  • Prop weaponry and devices that may cause risks to attendees and staff must be tagged and mentioned on the registration form. They will be kept in a secure area until the competition and will not be available for practice or photographs prior to this.
  • No incendiary devices or laser pointers will be permitted.
  • No weapons are to be brandished at another attendee, or the competition hosts, without prior warning and approval of the organiser.
  • All props must comply with the AVCon Weapons and Props Policy found in the Code of Conduct

Special Requirements

All special requirements will be up to the discretion of the organiser and must be mentioned on the entry form.

Competition Rules

  1. Individual entrants will be given a 2 minutes (maximum) to parade their costume, perform their skit, etc. (Groups will be given 3 minutes maximum).
  2. Entrants will be expected to answer questions asked by the hosts, or judges, pertaining to their costume and character.
  3. Participants may enter as an individual or as a group entry / skit if desired. They must be specified on the entry form.
  4. If you or your group require longer than the allocated time you must have your reason approved prior to the event.
  5. ‘Surprises’ must be approved by the organiser. This includes radical changes in clothing, lighting, or action. If in doubt, just ask!
  6. Offensive or rude behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in disqualification.

Judging

  • All judges’ decisions are final.
  • Judges and organisers may revoke prizes if costumes are proven to have been either used previously, not made by the entrant (where applicable), or are otherwise unsuitable for competition placement.
  • Judging of costumes will be based on the following criteria:
    1. Accuracy
    2. Quality of costume
    3. Knowledge of character

Note: Being in costume prior to the competition and generally being in the spirit of the convention generally improves your chances of winning!!
