AMV Competition

A smorgasbord of AMV entries from local talent and international flair battle it out for bragging rights and cool prizes. With entries from around the globe this will definitely be one of the highlights of the convention.

Past categories have included Best Action/Upbeat Video, Best Drama and/or Romance Video, Best Comedy and/or Trailer, Judges Choice and Fan Favourite. (Details and competition rules, including how to submit your videos are featured in the section below.)

AMV Iron Editor

Local and interstate AMV editors will battle it out over the course of the convention for the title of AVCon Iron Editor. Contestants are given various video sources prior to the convention and are allowed to choose any song they see fit.

On the Saturday of AVCon contestants will all meet together for the Iron Editor Revealed event, where AVCon's AMV Coordinator will give the contestants their secret source for the competition. From this point on the AMV editors can use as little or as much time as they desire to edit a masterpiece for judging on the Sunday of AVCon at the Iron Editor Judging event.

Definitely a must see.

AMV Comedy Hour

Come and see screenings of the funniest and well thought out comedy videos from all over the world.

There’s something for everyone’s taste here. We got parodies of popular video games, well lip synced comedy videos and even strange crossover videos mixing two completely different anime.

Avcon 2010 Anime Music Video Competition Rules

Note: The following rules are subject to change at any point in time. However, notification will be given on the forums to any changes made to the rules or submission deadline.

General Rules

  1. Entries sent to previous Avcon competitions are not eligible.
  2. All entries must be submitted by midnight JULY 14TH (entries postmarked after this date will not be accepted). See submission guidelines for more details.
  3. Videos that contain excessive mature content will not be accepted. No obscene language please (email avcon.amv@gmail.com if you require clarification of this rule).
  4. Videos must not exceed five minutes of length.
  5. Entrants can submit a maximum of three videos.
  6. Videos must not contain bumpers, title screens, credits, or any other forms of creator and/or footage/audio identification. If a video does contain any of the previously sated identification they may either be re-encoded (decreasing the quality of the video) or disqualified from the competition at the discretion of the AMV coordinator.
  7. 60% of the video must contain anime and/or video game footage.
  8. Videos must be of the individual’s creation, plagiarising other peoples work will not be tolerated and will result in bans from future competitions (including competitions at other Australian conventions)
  9. The AMV coordinator reserves the right to disqualify entries for any reason they see necessary to protect the overall quality and integrity of the event. These reasons can include:
    • Poor video or audio quality.
    • Failure to conform to the rules.
  10. The contest is open to international entries and does not require contestants to attend the conventions (however, it is preferred for domestic contestants). Prizes and awards will be mailed to winners who do not attend the convention.
  11. Submitted materials (CDs/DVDs) become the property of Avcon and will not be returned.
  12. By submitting an entry to Avcon, the video editor grants Avcon non-revocable permission to exhibit and distribute that work. The video editor otherwise retains all rights and responsibilities relating to its creation. The retention of all copyrights remains with the original holder of any and all copyrights.

Contest Structure

Category and award descriptions are guidelines only. The AMV coordinator may add, change, or eliminate categories as they see fit. The competition is divided into two categories, judge and fan votes.

Judge Votes – An anonymous panel of AMV editors will view eligible entries and vote for the best videos, prior to the convention. The following categories will apply for the 2010 Avcon AMV competition:

  • Action and/or Upbeat – Fast paced videos that get your heart racing and don’t allow you to blink, even for a second.
  • Drama and/or Romance – Videos with emotion and feeling that create a seamless and perfect flow of audio and video.
  • Comedy and/or Trailer – Well thought out parodies, mock trailers and comedy videos that will get everyone laughing and smiling.
  • Judges Choice – The top video chosen by Avcon AMV Competition Judges, supporting domestic talent over international entries.

Fan Votes – At the screening of the AMV competition at Avcon, judging forms will be available from the AMV coordinator as well as distributed randomly to the crowd. Videos will be judged by the audience with the top video receiving the award of “Fan Favourite”. This video is also eligible for awards in the judge vote categories.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions must be in digital format only (no VHS submissions will be accepted). Strictly only the formats below will be accepted, no exceptions and we prefer that you encode them in MPG, AVI, MKV, WMV or MP4 containers only:

  • DivX, XviD, HuffYUV
  • MPEG1, MPEG2
  • x.264
  • WMV (Windows Media Video)

Submissions can be on CD or DVD or submitted online. Please note that you must not author the discs (i.e. not make them playable on a DVD or VCD player) and provide them only as plain data. We will be playing from computers, connected to sound systems and projectors.

Please send the best quality possible. This is not a specific requirement for videos and your entry will not be judged or excluded from the competition based on it. It is more for your sake more than anything else. If submitting a large lossless copy, please include a compressed copy (XviD/DivX/x264) as well.

Mail Submissions

Mail entries on DVDs and CDs must be adequately labelled with the contestants name written on the disc (not the cover). If multiple disks are sent, please label disks accordingly (Disk 1 of 2, Disk 2 of 2, etc.). Prior to mailing your entry off you must email your video details (listed below under online submissions) to the AMV coordinator (avcon.amv@gmail.com) so the AMV coordinator is aware of your entry. You will receive an email confirmation when your entry has been received in the post.
