Become a Game Master (GM)
What is AVCon?
The AVCon Anime and Gaming Festival is an annual celebration of Japanese animation, video gaming, tabletop gaming, esports, game development, art, technology, and cosplay, all in the heart of Adelaide – the capital of South Australia!
Run by Team AVCon Inc, a not-for-profit volunteer organisation dedicated to serving the local South Australian community. Team AVCon Inc. also runs various other anime and gaming-themed events geared towards hobbyists, professionals, and the general public, meaning no matter your skill level or need, we have you covered! Because Team AVCon Inc. is a not-for-profit, all funds generated are used exclusively for making AVCon events better year after year. We put our full focus on promoting local content and giving the South Australian community an event that feels their own.
The AVCon Festival has been running for 21 years, and built a lasting legacy within South Australia, and stands as one of the pillars of pop culture celebration on the Australian calendar. Because of its long-lasting success, AVCon has developed a sterling reputation and is respected nationwide in multiple industries and communities.
Team AVCon runs events throughout the year and collaborates with the broader community and sponsors in addition to the AVCon Festival. With more events happening throughout the year, there are more opportunities for people with different levels of experience and interests to help shape AVCon in their way. Team AVCon values the uniqueness of our team and understands that when unique people work together, we can deliver extraordinary results.
AVCon enlists the help of over 400 volunteers to assist the Elect and Committee with the delivery of AVCon’s events, including the AVCon Festival. Volunteers range in age from 16 to 60 and help out in various activities to ensure our attendees have a fantastic experience. From assisting guests in setting up card games to working the ticketing booths, there are various roles for you to take on.
Become A Game Master
Tabletop is back at AVCon 2025 in a big way! We’ve doubled our space, bringing back all the fun activities from last year — plus new additions to the world of tabletop!
We’re looking for experienced Game Masters who are familiar with game rules and who are both patient and charismatic. AVCon GMs should be able to run short but engaging campaigns for experienced players, while also guiding newcomers through the basics of RPGs.
AVCon is a family-friendly event, so all games must be appropriate for all ages. Campaigns can be either pre-existing or original content created specifically for AVCon. GMs must provide their own equipment, such as rulebooks, dice, and miniatures. AVCon will supply essentials like paper, printouts, and pencils. Games will run in 150-minute blocks (2.5 hours) during both morning and afternoon shifts across the weekend. We ask that each applicant commit to running at least one 150-minute session over the weekend. You’ll also have the option to run more sessions if you’d like.
Perks of Becoming a Game Master
By being a Game Master at AVCon, you get the following perks:
✦ A weekend badge to AVCon
✦ Free entry to AVCon’s After Dark event
✦ An invitation to the AVCon After Party
All successful GM applicants must attend an AVCon Tabletop Information Session (either in person or online) prior to the event. If you have any questions about Tabletop at AVCon, please reach out to us at tabletop@avcon.org.au.
